Bookmarks for January 11th through January 18th

These are my links for January 11th through January 18th:

  • CSS3 + Progressive Enhancement = Smart Design • Perishable Press – # Support all browsers with perfect fidelity – not realistic for most budgets, requires many elaborate workarounds, hacks, etc., also difficult to maintain, upgrade, and extend.
    # Support all browsers to some degree – focus first on the latest and greatest browsers, and then go back and make sure that older browsers look and work reasonably well.
    # Support newer browsers, forget about the older stuff – make your sites look pixel-perfect on the newest versions of modern browsers and don’t worry about anything else.
  • space150 – Faust: Flash Augmenting Standards – Faust: Flash Augmenting Standards

Every web developer faces the problem sooner or later. The client – or the designer – wants to use interactive animation, video or sound to communicate their ideas. Flash is your best option.

However, Flash is not an open web standard like HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Because of its popularity, Flash is really a “de facto” standard, widely available to many users, but not all.

Should you build two separate sites? One in Flash and one with web-standard HTML? This can be very time consuming. It’s also very hard to keep the content synchronized. Now you have two versions of the content, which can be a problem for search engines.

Many developers build a “hybrid” site: mainly HTML, with some Flash embedded in the page. This works well for video from sites like YouTube and Vimeo.

But what if you want a Flash menu for navigation? Even if 89.1% of your users have Flash, there are still 10.9% who don’t. They won’t be able to browse your site.

  • 10 PHP functions you (probably) never use – When scripting in PHP, we often restrict ourselves to a limited number of API functions: the common ones, like print(), header(), define(), isset(), htmlspecialchars(), etc. If some needed functionality doesn’t exist, we often write it making use of these basic components which we have in mind. The PHP API actually offers a lot of functionality, some useless and some useful; often seldom used. I have been looking through the available functions and was interested to find some really cool functions that I should have known about. Here, I share my findings.
  • 100+ Seamless Patterns Great for Creating Website Backgrounds | Web Design Ledger – Seamless patterns are a great way to add interest and detail to a web design background. In this post we’ve rounded up over one hundred seamless patterns. You’ll find a wide variety of styles such as vintage, florals, and stripes. All of these are of very high quality so you can use them as is or use them as a foundation for your own background.
  • Getting Links from the Top 50 Domains – The good folks over at SEOMoz have provided us with a list of the Top 500 Linked Domains according to the Linkscape index. I thought it would be interesting to start churning through the list and finding out how search marketers, spammers, etc. are finding ways to get their links on each of these incredible domains. Some of them are incredibly sneaky and blackhat (check out the Flickr and AOL links, for example).
